Neighborhood Preservation, Inc.
Neighborhood Preservation, Inc. (NPI), a nonprofit organization in Memphis, uses PolicyMap to fight blight in neighborhoods throughout the city by providing housing organizations with a single tool to visualize local property data and other indicators to assess conditions in the community.
PolicyMap allows community development corporations and neighborhood organizations “to have the Rosetta Stone of planning jargon to use it to speak that language better and advocate and have the information to make data-driven decisions that will improve their neighborhood using community-level input.”

Challenge
NPI’s old property hub was a clunky database that required substantial computer knowledge to use and lacked mapping capability, leaving many of their users unable to access or visualize its valuable information.

Solution
NPI used PolicyMap to create a custom website, Memphis Fights Blight, that has enabled area organizations to make coordinated, data-driven decisions that reduce vacancy, litter, and illegal dumping. The site combines locally sourced data with PolicyMap’s extensive database of public indicators. NPI has been able to offer over 400 users an intuitive, comprehensive portal for mapping and understanding community and parcel-level property information in Memphis.
